Physician Profile

Paul B. Rosenberg, MD

Research:
Dr. Rosenberg's research program focuses on how changes in cellular calcium are decoded by a cell to activate signaling pathways that regulate transcription. We are also identifying the important molecules that shape changes in intracellular calcium into specific signals that regulate gene expression in striated muscle. Recent studies have revealed a novel calcium signaling cascade in muscle that in response to increased membrane excitability associated with input from motor nerve stimulation or neurohormonal activation increases calcium transients and activates the calcineurin/NFAT pathway. We believe that these studies will lead to enhanced understanding of the specificity of various calcium pools and how they regulate distinct calcium mediated processes such as contraction and gene expression. The goal of these research endeaveors will provide a better understanding of the failing heart and identify novel treatment strategies.
