Research:
Dr. Ohman is Professor of Medicine and Director of the Program for Advanced Coronary Disease at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina. He was educated at the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland, receiving his medical degree from the National University of Ireland. He completed a Residence in Internal Medicine at St. Laurence's Hospital and St. Vincent's Hospital in Dublin. He completed a Fellowship in the Division of Cardiology at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina and subsequently came on staff as faculty, where he rose in the ranks to Associate Professor with Tenure. After 10 years at Duke, he accepted the position of Chief of the Division of Cardiology and Director of the UNC Heart Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he served for nearly 5 years before returning to Duke to create a new program for the care of patients with advanced heart disease.
Dr. Ohman's clinical research has been in the area of interventional cardiology, reperfusion therapy, and risk stratification in acute coronary syndromes. He has served on the Steering Committees on trials of ST-elevation myocardial infarction, and in non-ST-elevation acute coronary syndrome. He serves on the Executive Committee for the REACH Initiative to examine adherence to secondary prevention in patients with vascular disease in 54 countries and 6 continents. He served as the Executive Co-Director of the CRUSADE National Quality Improvement Initiative between 2000-2007, which improved the adherence to the ACC/AHA guidelines to optimize care for patients with non-ST-elevation acute coronary syndrome as well as defined that adherence to guidelines were associated with lower mortality. This was published in 2006 and was elected as one of the best science papers of 2006 by the American Heart Association.
Based on his research, Dr. Ohman has contributed more than 300 peer-reviewed articles, numerous abstracts, book chapters, and invited publications, and co-authored 2 books in cardiology. He serves as an Associate Editor for the American Heart Journal and is on the Editorial Board for several journals. He has served as a peer reviewer for the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology on the guidelines for cardiac surgery, non-ST-elevation acute coronary syndrome, ST-elevation acute myocardial infarction, heart failure, and percutaneous coronary intervention. He has also served as the Chair of the Peer Review Committee for Guidelines for thrombolytic therapy for the American College of Chest Physicians and Chair of the Acute Cardiac Care Committee of the American Heart Association. In 2006 and 2007, he was the U.S. representative on the European Society of Cardiology Guidelines Task Force for non-ST elevation acute coronary syndromes. He has recently chaired the Writing Committee for the American Heart Association position statement for acute coronary syndrome care in the elderly.
Dr. Ohman is recipient of the Edith Walsh Award from the British Medical Association. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, Royal Society of Medicine, European Society of Cardiology, American College of Cardiology, Society for Cardiac Angiography and Interventions, and the American College of Chest Physicians.
