As Director of the Duke Translational Medicine Institute, Dr. Califf guides efforts aimed at translating scientific discoveries into therapies that benefit the health of patients and their surrounding communities by coordinating endeavors that include clinical research, basic science, community-based medicine, genomics, information technology, and bioinformatics. In addition to his work as a clinician, researcher, and administrator, he has served on the Cardio-Renal Advisory Committee of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Pharmaceutical Roundtable of the Institute of Medicine (IOM), and was a member of the IOM committee that recommended Medicare coverage of clinical trials. He has also served as Director of the coordinating center for the Centers for Education & Research in Therapeutics
TM (CERTs). He is currently co-Chair of the CTSA Consortium Oversight Committee, which is guiding the largest effort in U.S. history to develop the disciplines of clinical and translational research. Dr. Califf is the editor or co-editor of textbooks such as Acute Coronary Care, Comprehensive Cardiovascular Medicine, Textbook of Cardiovascular Medicine, Interventional Cardiovascular Medicine, and Atlas of Heart Diseases. He is Editor-in Chief of Elsevier's American Heart Journal and serves on the editorial boards for numerous peer-reviewed publications, including Circulation and the European Heart Journal. Dr. Califf is also a contributing editor for theheart.org.
